사랑하는 딸 유나가 떠난지 1년하고도 3달이 넘게 지났습니다.  그날 이후로 갑작스런 이별에 저희 가족이 겪고 있는 고통과 슬픔을 어떻게 말로 다 표현할 수 있겠습니까?

유나 사건 소식을 접하고서 뉴욕시민과 많은 분들이 표해 주신 애도와 위로에 깊이 감사드립니다. 당시 gofundme.com을 통해서 5,200여 명이 $430k 가량을 도네이션 해주셨는데, 깊은 고통과 슬픔에 잠겨 있던 저희 가족에게 참으로 큰 위로가 되었기에, 이 자리를 빌어서 다시 한번 깊이 감사 드립니다.

도네이션에 동참해 주신 5,200여 명의 마음을 헤아려서 저희 가족이 뉴욕시에 시민 안전을 위한 특별한 조치의 필요성을 전달해야 했고, 유사 사건의 재발 방지를 위한 캠페인에 앞장서야 했지만, 저희 가족 모두가 너무 큰 충격 탓에 한동안 정신을 차릴 수 없었고, 또한 로펌에서 정치적 발언이나 미디어 인터뷰를 삼가할 것을 권하는바람에 이제껏 원하는 목소리를 내지 못하고 참아왔었습니다. 그러다 이제서야 뉴욕시를 상대로 손해 배상 소송을 제기하게 되었고, 그동안 자문해왔던 로펌과도 무리한 변호사 비용 요구로 인해 갈라서게 되었기에, 지금부터는 저희 가족이 진정으로 원하는 것이 무엇인지 당당히 밝히고자  합니다.

우선 제 딸 유나의 죽음에는 다음과 같은 사회적 요인이 있다고 생각합니다.

첫째는 오랫동안 만연해왔던  노숙자 문제가 팬더믹 기간에 더 악화되었지만 뉴욕시가
이에 대해 제대로 대처하지 못했다는 점입니다. 이로 인해 제 딸을 죽인 살인자와 같은 노숙자들이 뉴욕시를 공포에 떨게 했는데도 시민의 생명과 안전을 책임져야 하는 뉴욕시가 그동안 무엇을 했는지 저는 알지 못합니다. 또한 팬더믹 시기에 노숙자에 의한 아시안계 여성을 대상으로한 범죄가 특히 많이 발생하였던 점을 주목할 필요가 있다고 봅니다.

둘째, 강력 범죄에 대한 경찰의  적절치 못한 대응으로 무고한 시민이 목숨을 잃거나 다치는 일들이 비일비재하게 발생하고 있다는 점입니다. 유나 사건에서 보듯이 3분만에 사건 현장에 출동한 경찰이 시민의 생명을 구하기 위한 어떤 조치도 취하지 않은채 뭉기적거리다가, 무려 1시간 20분이 지나서야 범행이 이루어진 아파트 안에 들어가 범인을 채포했지만, 제 딸 유나는 이미 사망한 뒤였습니다. 여기서 우리는 경찰의 존재 이유가 무엇인지 다시 생각해 볼 수밖에 없습니다.

끝으로 저희 가족이 뉴욕시에 원하는 바를 말씀드리고자 합니다.

첫째, 사건이 발생했던 맨하탄 차이나타운 인근의 노숙자 쉘터 한 곳을 Christina Yuna Lee
memorial  shelter로 명명해 주시기 바랍니다. 이를 통해 뉴욕 시민과 노숙자들에게 범죄에 대한 경각심을 일깨움으로써 범죄 예방의 효과와 함께 다시는 이 땅에서 유나와 같이 선령한 시민이 허무하게 목숨을 잃는 일이 발생하지 않기를
바라는 의미를 담은 저희 가족의 한맺힌 요구를 반드시 들어 주시기 바랍니다.

둘째. 저희 가족은 언제 끝날지도 모를 재판보다는, 가능한 빠른 시일 내에 뉴욕시와 원만한 합의가 이루어져서 소정의 합의금을 받게 된다면 전액을 유나 이름으로 명명된 노숙자 쉘터에 기부해서 노숙자들의 재활을 위해 사용토록 하겠습니다.

이것만이 잔혹무도한 범죄로 인해 홀연히 사랑하는 가족과 친구들 곁을  떠날 수밖에 없었던 유나의 억울한 영혼을 달래줄 수 있는유일한 방법이라고 저희 가족은 믿습니다.

It has been one year and three months since my daughter Christina Yuna Lee became an angel. Though I cannot begin to describe the hurt and sadness that our family has experienced since then, I sincerely thank everyone who mourned with us. Approximately 5200 people donated to our Gofundme campaign and raised $430k—it was tremendously consoling for us to think that there were so many out there who sympathized and wished to help.

From the start, the campaign’s objective was to communicate to the City of New York a call for a safer community to ensure what happened to Yuna would not happen to anyone else. However, amidst our distress and grief, our family was instructed by the law firm in charge of Yuna’s case to abstain from any media appearance or making political statements. Not long ago, the firm notified us that it wished to amend our existing fee arrangement. After much deliberation, we concluded the resulting legal fees would be astronomical, and that it would be best to obtain new counsel. Since then, we’ve filed suit against the New York City Police and wish to candidly speak about what it is our family wants.

We believe there were several systematic reasons for my daughter Yuna’s death.

First is the lack of response against the increased unhoused population across the city during the pandemic. Had the City provided adequate assistance to those who needed shelter, perhaps Yuna could have come home safely that night. It is New York City’s duty to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its residents. It should also be noted that there were more crimes, particularly against Asian women, committed by unhoused persons during the pandemic.

Second is the New York City Police’s inadequate response to violent crimes, leading to many more New Yorkers injured, or at times, dead. The police arrived at Yuna’s building in just three minutes. But they waited an additional hour and twenty minutes to actually enter her apartment, even though they had received calls from neighbors regarding the severity of the situation. When they entered, they caught the killer but my daughter was long gone. Are there not so many things the police could have done differently that night?

Now I wish to address direct demands that our family has for the City of New York.

First, we wish to name one of the homeless shelters near Manhattan’s Chinatown the “Christina Yuna Lee Memorial Shelter.” It will remind New York of the importance of crime prevention and giving care to those who need it. This demand is based on our family’s wish that no one falls victim to a sudden yet preventable death like Yuna’s.

Second, our family has no desire to be involved in this lawsuit for years to come. It is our wish to come to a swift and fair settlement with the City—every penny of the award will be donated to a homeless shelter named after Yuna to aid and support New York’s unhoused population.

We believe this is the way to honor Yuna, who was taken much too soon from the family and friends who loved her dearly.
